Three of last year’s winners (« Matador », « Movistar » and « Iberostar »), at the top of their classifications
« Iberostar » and « Lelagain » set the tempo in the X-41 and X-35 one design classes
Palma de Mallorca, 2 August. A great first day of races opened the 29th Copa del Rey Audi Mapfre. « Alegre », « Matador », « Itaca IX », « Movistar », « Lelagain » and « Iberostar » are the first six leaders of this 29th edition, three of which are last year’s winners too. The conditions couldn’t have been better, and the 9 to 12 knots of southeasterly breeze at the 200 made it possible to run two races in the bay of Palma.
In IRC, Tim Powell’s « Ran » didn’t meet the expectations, due to the light breeze in which the British 72 footer wasn’t able to perform at her best, and could only manage to be third in the overall standings after two races. Andy Soriano’s « Alegre » was first in the inaugural race, whereas Markus Wieser’s « Container » managed to do so in the second, and both boats are now first and second respectively. Hap Fauth’s « Bella Mente » is fourth.
As far as Alberto Roemmer’s « Matador » is concerned, the Argentinean boat steered by Vasco Vascotto showed her fighting spirit and her will to repeat victory in this 29th edition of the Copa del Rey Audi Mapfre. A second and a first place in today’s two races place her at the top of the board in the IRC2 classification. Just one point behind is Spanish TP52 « Bribón », with Gonzalo Araujo at the helm, which was first in the first race. This win places her second, ahead of « Cristabella » of Roberto Bermúdez de Castro. John Cook’s Transpac 52 is 3rd, followed by Spanish « CAM » and Norwegian « Fram », fourth and fifth respectively. The boat steered by the Prince of Asturias has managed a third and a sixth place in a very even TP52’s fleet.
In RI1, the first day of races delivered some surprises, since none of the favorites managed to climb to the top of the board. Manuel Gallego’s « Itaca IX » controlled today’s both races, and is first, followed by three boats tied on seven points.
The favorites did meet the expectations in RI2 though, and Pedro Campos’ « Movistar » is first just one point ahead of Nacho Campos’ « Tanit Medilevel », and one ahead of « Vell Marí » of Juan Cabrer.
Regarding the one-design fleets, X-41 « Iberostar » – former « Karhu »- started off on the right foot, just as she did last year, and is first in her class after doing a first and a third place. « X-Spain » seems the boat to beat after one day of races, a Fuengirola flagged unit with Clemente Toribio at the helm.
in X-35 class, Alessandro Solerio’s Italian « Legalain » is first, one point ahead of Javier Sanz’s « Red Eléctrica », and « Salty Dog » of Hans Hout is third after a gap of seven points. « X on the beach », which won the first race, could only manage 15th on the second one, a sign of the very even level of this one-design fleet.
Tomorrow tuesday the committee expects to run two races in the Bay of Palma from 13:00 hours, and similar weather conditions are likely.
