Victories for “Alegre” and “Matador” in the coastal race

« Alegre » and « Matador » stretch the gap upon their rivals after comfortably winning their races

« Itaca IX » goes back to the first place in RI 1, in spite of « Alex y Rubio Rumbo a Ti » good performance, which controlled the coastal race. « Tanit Medilevel » is new leader in RI 2.

« Red Electrica » loses out to « Legalain » in X-35, whereas « Iberostar » consolidates at the top of the X-41 board.

Palma de Mallorca, 4 de agosto. The 29 Copa del Rey Audi Mapfre crosses its Ecuador tomorrow, and some of the boats begin to look like winners in their divisions. « Alegre » in IRC A and « Matador » in IRC B made it clear who are the bosses in the coastal race held today, which showed their superiority on the water. Big swing in the top positions for the rest of the classes, which will result in three very exciting final days of competition, especially now where the discards come into play. « Itaca IX », « Tanit Medilevel » and « Legalain » climb up to the top of the board in RI 1, RI 2 and X-35, displacing all the former leaders. X-41 « Ibersotar » remains leader in her division.

The compensated time classes (IRC and RI) faced today’s traditional coastal race, a thirty miles long course which scored double, in twelve to fifteen knots wind which shifted from the southwesterly to the easterly. From the start, the fleet headed to an offset mark, from which they sailed downwind towards the first bottom mark, and from there to the variable windward one. The first scoring mark was placed next to Illetes, and, from there, a beat took them to the Isle of Sech, where the second scoring mark had been set, then back to Sech, and straight to the finish line.

The IRC A delivered few novelties in an eventful day which resulted in two broken spinnakers, those of « Ran » and « Bellamente ». The first stretch was for the giant of the fleet, « Ran », what allowed her to comfortably control the rest of the race. Nikklas Zenstromm’s giant couldn’t manage to get away from Andy Soriano’s « Alegre » though, which passed the Judel & Vrolijk designed 72 footer at the finish line after times were compensated, thus holding to the lead in the IRC A division, which covers the Mini Maxi class. Ran’s today’s good performance places him in the second place thus displacing Container to the third position. « Bella Mente » could only manage a second and two fourth places, and is now out of the podium positions.

In IRC B, « CAM » put herself together, in spite of which Fernando Leon’s crew couldn’t manage to pass Argentinean « Matador ». A good start and tactics allowed the boat steered by the Prince of Asturias to control the race from beginning to end, but Guillermo Parada onboard « Matador » managed to cut down distances at Illetes where the first scoring mark was placed, just like « Bribón » and « Cristabella ». On the upwind which headed to Sech, the 52 footer of the Prince of Asturias seemed to stretch the gap again, but after times were compensated, the boat ended up being fifth and third. « Matador » was first in both scoring marks in compensated time, thanks to a good recovery in the first beat, where it had to auto penalize, and a a conservative last downwind, thus stretching the gap upon her main rivals, Gonzalo Araújo and Roberto Bermúdez. « CAM » is now third, just one point behind « Cristabella », which is third. « Bribón » is still second.

In RI 1, « Itaca XI » goes back to the first place she lost yesterday, thanks to the two second places she managed in the coastal race, which was won by « Alex y Rubio Rumbo a Ti » of Enrique Rubio. Manuel Gallego’s 47.7 is one point ahead of her main contender, and four ahead of « Rats on fire » of Rafael Carbonell, third in the overall classification after five races.

« Movistar » of Pedro Campos was second in today’s RI 2 both races, which were won by « Tanit Medilevel » of Nacho Campos, thus gaining the first place of the board.

The wind which was lacking yesterday in the Bravo race area, opposite the airport, made it possible for the X-35 to run three races in a good southwesterly breeze -known as Embat in the local argot-. « Red Eléctrica » loses two places in the overall classification due to a twisted spi in the last downwind of the second race which caused them to finish eleventh, what favored Italian « Legalain » which is now first after a first and two second places. Second is « X on the beach » of German Ingo Dietrich. Tomorrow’s discard gives hopes to Javier Sanz.

Finally, « Iberostar » of Javier Banderas holds to the first position in the X-41, after a third and two first places in today’s three races.

The committee hopes to run two races for the RI and one-design classes tomorrow, thus achieving the eight races which would allow a discard.
