Excellente entrée en matière cette nuit à San Francisco pour Loïck Peyron et ses hommes. En sortant vainqueur du duel contre China Team dans des conditions musclées et un brouillard dense, Energy Team s’est qualifié pour les quarts de finale de match-race. Le team français va croiser le fer dès la nuit prochaine avec Team New Zealand de Dean Barker, juste avant le début des courses en flotte.
Brouillard dense sur Frisco, mer formée et vent soutenu sur la baie – plus de 20 noeuds – la deuxième étape des AC World Series a commencé de manière musclée cette nuit à San Francisco. Comme de coutume, cette première journée de compétition était consacrée aux qualifications de Match Race et Energy Team n’a pas raté son entame : victorieux de leur duel contre le China Team barré par le jeune Néo-Zélandais Phil Robertson (25 ans), l’équipage d’Energy Team se qualifie directement pour les quarts de finale qui auront lieu cette nuit. Et le menu est plus qu’intéressant : il s’agira de tenter de battre en duel les Kiwis de Dean Barker. Le match Peyron/Barker vaudra son pesant d’or entre ces deux sommités de la voile mondiale au sommet de leur art. Pour s’être entrainés avec les Néo-Zélandais avant le début de la compétition, Loïck Peyron sait que l’affaire est loin d’être perdue d’avance et qu’il y a peut-être un coup à jouer…
Le duel contre China Team n’était pourtant pas très bien engagé, cette nuit. Une situation de blocage sur la ligne de départ – très courte – engendrait un léger retard au départ d’Energy Team sur leurs adversaires du jour. Mais très vite, les Français ont fait parler leur potentiel de vitesse et leur science de la trajectoire pour revenir sur China Team et capitaliser tout de même une minute d’avance sur la ligne d’arrivée. Un écart conséquent dans ces AC World Series. En attendant un exploit ce soir ? Les hommes de Loïck Peyron regorgent de confiance alors que les Néo-Zélandais, eux, doutent après leur mauvais score (7e) sur la précédente étape des World Series (en août dernier, déjà à San Francisco) qui était leur plus mauvais résultat depuis dix ans sur une épreuve de l’America’s Cup. Les K! iwis ont besoin de victoires pour remettre les pendules à l’heure, mais les Français ne sont pas disposés à les laisser faire… Ce sera donc chaud ce soir, avec ce duel en apéritif avant les deux premières courses en flotte. Mais pour revenir au match, Loïck Peyron le dit tout net : « une belle rencontre nous attend face aux Kiwis, avec lesquels nous nous sommes entraînés cette semaine. Et nous sommes plutôt confiants… »

By winning their duel against China Team in some rough conditions and dense fog, Energy Team qualified for the match race quarter finals. The French team will be coming up against Dean Barker’s Team New Zealand tonight, just before the start of the fleet races.
There was thick fog in San Francisco with heavy seas and strong winds in excess of 20 knots in the Bay for the second leg of the AC World Series, which got off to a very physical start last night in San Francisco. As usual, this first day of racing was given over to the Match Race qualifiers and Energy Team was successful from the outset, winning their duel against China Team with the young New Zealander Phil Robertson (aged 25) at the helm. This meant that the crew of Energy Team qualified directly for the quarter finals, which will take place tonight. And we can look forward to a very interesting contest, as the French will be up against Dean Barker’s Kiwis. The match between Peyron/Barker will see two giants of sailing battling it out. After training with the New Zealand team before the competition started, Loïck Peyron knows that the contest is far from being lost and feels they are in with every chance of pulling it off…
The duel against China Team did not however begin that well last night. They were blocked on the starting line – a short line – meaning that Energy Team got off to a rather late start against their opponents. But very quickly, the French showed their ability to get the speed up and find the right route to catch China Team and even ended up finishing one minute ahead at the finish, which is a huge lead in this AC World Series. So can we look forward to a major success tonight? Loïck Peyron’s men are brimming over with confidence, while the New Zealanders are still recovering from their poor showing (7th) in the previous leg of the World Series (last August in San Francisco), which was their worst result for ten years in an America’s Cup event. The Kiwis need to win to get back on an even keel, but the French are not going to make it easy for them… It is going to be a tricky fight tonight with this duel as a starter before the main course wi! th the first two fleet races. Going back to the match, Loïck Peyron says quite clearly: « We are looking forward to a great fight against the Kiwis, with whom we trained this week. And we feel totally confident… »
