Dona Bertarelli et Yann Guichard vont toute cette semaine poursuivre les navigations à bord du Maxi Trimaran Spindrift 2 au large de la Bretagne. Une longue session d’entrainement, qui devrait culminer avec un Aller-Retour jusqu’aux Açores débute aujourd’hui, en configuration course, avec à bord et aux côtés de Dona et de Yann, l’équipage « titulaire » qui s’est illustré lors de la victoire dans la Fastnet Race en août dernier. Ces prises en main grandeur nature, avec la volonté affirmée de naviguer de plus en plus dans des conditions océaniques soutenues, trouveront dès la fin du mois de septembre, avec un convoyage jusqu’à Portimao au Portugal, leur finalité, à savoir une tentative contre le temps référence (7 jours 10 heures 58 minutes et 53 secondes) de la Route de la Découverte, entre Cadix et San Salvador aux Bahamas.
Première transat pour Spindrift 2
« Nous allons cette semaine effectuer quelques sorties avec des invités à bord, et nous enchaînerons dès la fin de semaine avec trois jours et trois nuits au large, du côté des Açores. Nous allons résolument cette semaine chercher des vents plus forts, afin de soumettre la plateforme mais aussi l’équipage à des conditions de plus en plus extrêmes, proches de ce que toutes les grandes aventures que nous ambitionnons vont nous réserver. » Avec un équipage de 14 hommes déjà bien en place, Spindrift 2 pousse un peu plus haut le curseur de sa quête de performances. « La Route de la Découverte » est un challenge idéal pour Spindrift 2 dans la montée en puissance de notre team » poursuit Guichard ; « C’est un très beau parcours d’Atlantique Nord mais en sa partie australe, très compliqué météorologiquement, et long dans la durée. La barre est haute mais constitue un très bel exercice pour nous tester en configuration « compétition ». Et Dona Bertarelli de souligner « Ca sera notre premier record et aussi ma première traversée de l’Atlantique mais en attendant la Route de la découverte nous allons peut être tenter le record de la Manche la semaine prochaine si une fenêtre météo favorable se présente. Cette nouvelle session d’entrainement offshore dans des conditions plus soutenues vont me permettre de progresser encore à la barre. J’ai parfaitement pris mes repères à bord et au sein de l’équipage. Ce bateau est étonnant ; il est maniable et sain, mais on sent qu’il faut en permanence en garder sous le pied. On peut le pousser en toute sécurité si on fait les choses dans l’ordre et correctement, dans l’anticipation permanente. »
En Stand by dès le 5 octobre
Spindrift 2 rejoindra donc dès la fin septembre Portimao, au Portugal, à quelques 50 milles de la zone de départ historique de Cadix. « Portimao dispose des installations favorables pour notre grand trimaran » précise Guichard. « Nous comptons débuter notre stand by à partir du 5 octobre. » Une fois aux Amériques, le team Spindrift enchaînera avec un convoyage retour en équipage réduit, « de façon à pousser un peu plus loin nos recherches sur l’adaptabilité de ce bateau à une configuration solitaire, afin de savoir si nous pouvons ou non prétendre à participer à la Route du Rhum 2014 avec Spindrift 2… »
La Route de la Découverte, Columbus Route
La Route de la découverte était à l’origine une course en équipage reliant Cadix à Saint-Domingue, qui fut créée en 1984. Il s’agissait alors de parcourir à la voile une distance similaire à celle parcourue par Christophe Colomb 3 août au 12 octobre 1492 entre Palos de la Frontera (près de Cadix en Espagne) et Guanahani (baptisée San Salvador par le découvreur), via l’archipel des Canaries. C’est le catamaran de 26 m Fleury Michon III de Philippe Poupon qui remportait la première édition en 1984, en 14 jours 14 heures 49 minutes, édition à laquelle 30 équipages avaient pris part . La deuxième édition en 1988 fut remportée par Jet-Services le catamaran de Serge Madec.
Mais les véritables initiateurs de ce record furent Grant Dalton et Bruno Peyron en 2000, à bord du catamaran Club Med, en prélude à la course autour du monde The Race. Le chasseur de record américain Steve Fossett, avait amélioré le temps de plus d’une journée en 2003 avec son maxi catamaran PlayStation en 9 jours, 13 heures, 30 minutes et 18 secondes.
C’est Franck Cammas sur Groupama 3 qui détient aujourd’hui et depuis mai 2007 le temps référence en 7 jours 10 heures 58 minutes et 53 secondes, à 21,70 noeuds de moyenne.

Dona Bertarelli and Yann Guichard will continue their preparation on board the maxi trimaran Spindrift 2 this week off the coast of Brittany. A long training session, which should culminate with a round trip to the Azores, begins today in race trim, with the team who won the Fastnet Race in August on board alongside Bertarelli and Guichard. With that under their belt, the plan to sail increasingly in ocean conditions will see the team deliver the maxi to Portimao in Portugal at the end of September. From there the intention is to attempt to beat the record time for The Discovery Route between Cadiz and San Salvador in the Bahamas (7 days 10 hours 58 minutes and 53 seconds).

« We’ll have a few outings this week with guests on board, and then we will get together at the weekend for three days and nights in the ocean to the coast of the Azores, » Guichard said. The crew of 14 men and women are looking for every edge for sailing the largest racing trimaran in the world. « This week we will definitely look for stronger winds to test the boat in, but also for the crew to experience more and more extreme conditions that will be close to what we will find on the all great adventures to which we aspire, » Guichard said. Spindrift 2 keeps raising the bar in its quest for performance. « The Discovery Route is an ideal challenge for Spindrift 2 in building the strength of our team,” Guichard said. “It’s a beautiful North Atlantic course, but it’s the southern part and meteorologically very complicated and long in duration. We’ve set the bar high, but it’s a very good exercise to test our set-up in ‘competition’. That is something Bertarelli emphasised: « This boat is amazing; it is manageable and safe, but we feel that we must constantly keep a little in reserve. You can push it safely if you do things in order and correctly, in the permanent anticipation. For this new offshore training session in more testing and sustained conditions, I will be able to learn more at the helm. If there is a favourable weather window early next week, we will try for our first record with a Channel crossing (between Cowes and Dinard). Then it will be The Discovery Route, which will be special as it will be my first Atlantic crossing. »
On stand by from October 5
At the end of September Spindrift 2 will arrive in Portimao, Portugal, close to the starting area off the historic port of Cadiz. « Portimao has good facilities for our big trimaran » Guichard said. « We intend to be on standby from October 5. » Once in the Americas, the Spindrift team will join up with a return convoy and have a reduced crew on board « in order to push a little further our research on the suitability of this boat for a single-handed configuration to assess whether or not we can try and participate in the 2014 Route du Rhum with Spindrift 2,” Guichard said.

This meant sailing a similar distance to that travelled by Christopher Columbus from August 3 and October 12, 1492 between Palos de la Frontera (near Cadiz in Spain) and Guanahani (christened San Salvador by the discoverer), via the Canary Islands. The 26-metre catamaran, Fleury Michon III, skippered by Philippe Poupon, won the first edition in 1984 in 14 days 14 hours and 49 minutes, with 30 teams taking part. The second edition in 1988 was won by the catamaran Jet Services, skippered by Serge Madec.
But the real initiators of this modern record were Grant Dalton and Bruno Peyron in 2000, on board the catamaran Club Med, in preparation for the round the world race, The Race. The hunter of records, American Steve Fossett, improved the time by more than one day in 2003 on his maxi catamaran PlayStation, finishing in 9 days, 13 hours, 30 minutes and 18 seconds.
