Mercredi 3 octobre, dans le célèbre Yacht Club Italiano de Gênes, la remise des prix de l’European Tour clôturait symboliquement la toute première (et belle) saison de compétition des MOD70. Vainqueur de la Krys Ocean Race et 2e de l’European Tour, Yann Guichard et ses hommes (Spindrift racing) sont sacrés vainqueurs du Multi One Championship. Rendez-vous en 2013 pour de nouvelles aventures sur trois coques !
Clap de fin sur une magnifique année de compétition. Du 7 juillet au 2 octobre 2012, les cinq MOD70 ont enchaîné 50 jours de compétition. 50 jours extrêmes en terme de vitesses atteintes, d’intensité des débats et de suspense entre des équipages de très haut niveau. Quel que soit le format de course.
La Krys Ocean Race (7-12 juillet), course transatlantique entre New York et Brest remportée par Spindrift racing, a été avalée en moins de 5 jours, à plus de 25 nœuds de moyenne.
Le MOD70 European Tour, épreuve itinérante mixant grandes étapes au large et régates inshore entre Kiel (Allemagne), Dublin (Irlande), Cascais (Portugal), Marseille (France) et Gênes (Italie) a été le théâtre, pendant un mois, d’arrivées hallucinantes, avec des écarts de quelques secondes entre les bateaux. FONCIA s’impose sur cette deuxième épreuve du Multi One Championship.
Quant aux MOD70, trimarans monotypes de 22 mètres, ils se sont révélés être une plateforme idéale : performants, marins et fiables. Capables de pointes à presque 40 nœuds, ils ont navigué dans toutes conditions de vent, sans soucis techniques. Par ailleurs, la proximité des performances pures a mis en exergue le talent des 6 à 8 hommes d’équipage, l’aventure humaine transcendant la compétition technologique.
Pour cette première saison, l’examen de passage est donc réussi. L’année prochaine, la flotte va s’étoffer avec l’arrivée de l’équipe de Jean-Pierre Dick sur Paprec-Virbac. Il y aura un nouveau European Tour au printemps. Et un tour du monde à suivre.

« Il y a eu une transat express puis un Tour de l’Europe très éprouvant et au final c’est la régularité qui paye. Michel (Desjoyeaux) fait 3 et 1, nous, 1 et 2. On ouvre le bal de cette première saison des MOD70 ! Ça motive encore plus pour l’année prochaine, pour continuer à travailler et essayer de faire aussi bien en 2013. Je suis super content. Nous sommes une nouvelle équipe, une nouvelle écurie montée avec Léo Lucet de A à Z il n’y a même pas un an donc, c’est beau de gagner ce Multi One Championship 2012 ! Je suis heureux pour moi et pour l’équipe avec qui ça s’est vraiment bien passé. Une de nos forces, c’est l’équipage qui a toujours bien fonctionné, il y a toujours eu des bons binômes à bord, une bonne ambiance. L’alchimie a bien pris. Et ça, c’est le rôle du skipper. Car il y avait de vraies personnalités à bord, comme Pascal Bidegorry et d’autres, mais je ne me suis pas trompé, ça a été un vrai plus de l’avoir avec nous sur toute cette saison. »

« Pour nous, c’était une saison test. Il fallait démontrer la qualité de la plateforme, que les bateaux étaient solides, fiables et performants. Dans la Krys Ocean Race, ils ont navigué dans des conditions extrêmes et ils sont tous arrivés à bon port en bon état, même si Race for Water a été abîmé suite à sa rencontre avec un container. L’European Tour était aussi un challenge en terme d’organisation d’événement et de mise en place de différents formats de course, inshore et offshore. Au final, ça a été incroyable. Le suspense a été incroyable. La monotypie a vraiment rempli son rôle, les bateaux arrivaient en l’espace de quelques minutes à peine. Les marins ont fait la différence. Pour eux, c’était extrêmement éprouvant. Ils n’ont jamais pu se relâcher pendant 1 mois. Mais c’est aussi ce qui faisait la beauté de l’exercice. Sur les inshore, le spectacle a été superbe. J’ai encore en tête les images des City Races de Dublin disputées dans 20 nœuds de vent, sous le soleil, c’était magique. Je suis vraiment heureux. On a brillamment passé l’examen 2012. Par rapport à la situation économique actuelle, arriver à développer un circuit comme on l’a fait cette année, c’est magnifique. Pour l’année prochaine, notre calendrier se met en place et nous sommes à la recherche des partenaires titres pour le Tour du Monde. Nous aurons au minimum 6 bateaux. Et il y a une très forte probabilité pour qu’on en ait sept ».

« C’est un plaisir d’avoir 100% des bateaux présents ici Gênes au terme de cette belle saison. On a eu un très beau match dans cet European Tour qui s’est joué sur la dernière manche entre Spindrift racing et FONCIA pour la première place et entre Musandam Oman Sail et Race for Water pour la 3e place. A ce titre, c’est un succès. Et c’est tout l’intérêt de la monotypie. Les bateaux sont plaisants, performants. C’est une réussite technique. C’était un challenge d’enchaîner 30 jours de course, de passer dans 5 pays à un rythme très soutenu. Aujourd’hui, nous avons 4 villes qui souhaitent poursuivre avec nous l’année prochaine. Nous savons déjà qu’en 2013, le parcours sera du sud vers le nord, donc ce sera une autre histoire, peut-être plus ventée d’ailleurs. Maintenant, il n’y a plus qu’à faire grossir cette flotte et à l’internationaliser. Paprec-Virbac va nous rejoindre après le Vendée Globe. Ensuite, nous avons toujours le bateau N°2 à vendre. On discute activement avec des teams étrangers : c’est notre objectif, développer le circuit à l’international, le plus possible ».
In the famous Yacht Club Italiano in Genoa, Wednesday October 3rd, the glittering prizegiving for the first MOD70 European Tour lowered the curtain on the first exciting season of competition in the new MOD70 class. Winners of the KRYS OCEAN RACE and second overall in the MOD70 European Tour, Yann Guichard and the crew of Spindrift racing win the 2012 Multi One Championship. Teams are already looking forwards to next year!
The gala evening was a beautiful end to a great season of competition, between July 7th and October 2nd 2012, the five MOD70’s -Race for Water, FONCIA, Groupe Edmond de Rothschild, Spindrift racing and Musandam-Oman Sail have enjoyed 50 days of competition, racing at high speeds, high intensity at close quarters no matter if the format has been transoceanic, offshore or round the buoys sprint races.
The first KRYS OCEAN RACE (7-12 July), the transatlantic from New York to Brest was won by Spindrift racing and was completed in less than five days at an average speed of more than 25kts.
The inaugural MOD70 European Tour delivered a combined test of offshore and inshore racing, joining Kiel (Germany), Dun Laoghaire by Dublin (Ireland), Cascais (Portugal), Marseille (France) and Genoa (Italy) over the course of one full month of racing, from September 2nd to October 2nd. The finishes proved incredibly close, often only seconds separating the top finishers and results never concluded until the finish line was crossed. Michel Desjoyeaux’s FONCIA won this inaugural edition.
As for the 70 foot (22 metre) one design MOD70, they have prove to be the perfect platform, almost beyond expectation. They have proven very fast, reliable, seaworthy and perfectly evenly matched for speed. Capable of almost 40kts, they raced in all wind conditions without any technical problems. In the end it was the human performance, revealing the talents of the crew of six offshore and eight inshore, and not any technological advantage which made the vital difference.
And so this season is one which passed with flying colours. Next year the fleet will grow with the addition of Jean-Pierre Dick on Virbac-Paprec. There will be a new MOD70 European Tour in the spring, and a world tour to follow.

« First was that super fast transatlantic and then a tour of Europe, both very stressful and high intensity but in the end it is the consistency which pays. I am really happy. We are a new team which we built with Léo Lucet from the ground up in less than a year, so it is great to win the Multi One Championship in 2012. « For us, it was a season test. It was necessary to demonstrate the quality of the platform, the boats were solid, reliable and efficient. In the KRYS OCEAN RACE they sailed under extreme conditions but all finished safely in good condition, even Race for Water which was damaged due to their encounter with a container. The European Tour was also a challenge in terms of event organization and implementation of different race formats, inshore and offshore. In the end, it was amazing. The suspense was incredible. The one design really fulfilled its role, the boats finished in just a few minutes. The sailors made the difference. For them, it was extremely challenging. They were never able to relax for one month. That also contributes to the test of the tour. Inshore, the show was superb. I still have in mind the images of Dublin City races sailed in 20 knots of wind, the sun, it was magical. I’m really happy. It has been successful in every sphere in 2012. Given the current economic climate to be able to develop a circuit like we did this year is fantastic. For next year, our schedule is set and we are looking for title partners the World Tour. We will have at least six boats. And there is a very high probability that may be seven. »

« It is a pleasure to have 100% of the MOD70’s here Genoa after this fantastic season. We had great, high level sport on this European Tour which was played out in the end on the last miles of the last leg between FONCIA and Spindrift racing, and between Musandam-Oman Sail and Race for Water for third place. As such, it is a success. And that’s the whole point of the one design. The boats are fast and efficient. This is a technical success. It was a challenge to put together 30 days of racing, in five countries lived at a very fast pace. Today we have four cities who wish to continue with us next year. We already know that in 2013, the course will be from south to north, so it will be another great story, perhaps even better. Now, there is more to do to see this fleet grow and internationalise. Paprec-Virbac will join us after the Vendée Globe. Then we still have boat N ° 2 for sale. There are active discussions with foreign teams: it is our goal to develop the international circuit as much as possible. »
