Aquila conquers the wind

by Jean-Christophe Guillaumin

Announced at the last Cannes boat show, and premiered in Miami in February 2026, the Aquila 50 Sail is one of the sensations of the year. It has to be said that when the world’s leading manufacturer of motor catamarans enters the ultra-competitive sailing catamaran segment – and at the heart of the market with a 50-footer – everyone pays close attention.

An ultra-competitive market

Until now, Aquila has reigned supreme in the Powercats segment, thanks to standards of volume and stability that have won over many yachtsmen on all the world’s seas. With the 50 Sail, the stakes are high for the China-based manufacturer: to offer a yacht capable of taking on the open seas with elegance and efficiency, offering the space and volume that yachtsmen are looking for without betraying what has made the shipyard so successful…

Off Miami, the Aquila 50 Sail shows its full potential

In the 50-foot category, the references are already numerous and well established. The challenge for Aquila is to make a real difference, without scaring off sailors – whether owners or charterers – who are looking for a comfortable, easy-to-handle catamaran.

In terms of layout, Aquila has taken up the codes that have made its Powercat such a success: volume, modularity and circulation. The shipyard offers configurations from 4 to 6 cabins, an obvious strategic advantage for premium charter customers, but also for owners sailing with extended families or crew. Another interesting feature is the fully rigid forward cockpit, designed for relaxation. This fully-fledged living area will delight the crew at anchor or when sailing in fine weather. There are many clever features to simplify life, such as the ability to move directly from the fly to the forward cockpit, while the modular aft platform can accommodate a large tender or be transformed into a veritable “beach club”, all without the need for hydraulics.

Designed by J & J Design, the Aquila 50 Sail is a cruising boat that doesn’t pretend to achieve impressive averages under sail, but which should – to be verified in a future test – enable you to sail far, long and comfortably.

A whole range already in the pipeline

The first Aquila sailboat won’t be alone for long. The shipyard has just announced the presentation, before the end of 2026, of an Aquila 44 Sail and a 65-footer in 2027. We have no doubt that this range will continue to expand in the future.
