Wellcraft 28: one hull, three temperaments

by Jean-Christophe Guillaumin

Previewed at Boot Düsseldorf 2026, the Wellcraft 28 reshuffles the deck in a highly competitive market. With three distinct versions based on the same hull, the American shipyard is exploring a modular approach to the 8.50 m powerboat. Speedster, T Top or Explorer, three programs, three uses, a common technical base.

Wellcraft 28: one hull, three interpretations

At Boot Düsseldorf 2026, Wellcraft unveiled its new 28-footer. And it’s not just an isolated model, but a platform available in three clearly differentiated versions. In concrete terms, the basis is the same hull measuring 8.56 m overall and 2.90 m wide, with a draft of 0.63 m. Fuel capacity ranges from 340 to 530 liters, demonstrating the American manufacturer’s determination to offer a boat capable of going fast and far. Clearly, this is not just a coastal boat. The 80 liters of fresh water on board confirm this desire to broaden the range of uses.

The first version of the Wellcraft 28 is the Speedster. This version is all about lightness and direct contact with the environment. Sport and performance are on the agenda for a boat claimed to weigh 2,500 kg.

The T Top version is undoubtedly the most versatile compromise. Its hard top provides welcome protection from the sun and sea spray, while retaining the spirit of the central console. With a displacement of 2,700 kg, this version is the most adaptable model for mixed sailing, whether for family outings, sport fishing or fast coastal cruising. This is probably the model that will appeal to the widest European audience.

Last but not least, the Explorer offers a more distinct change of register. Here, the closed superstructure transforms the on-board experience. Taller and heavier, weighing in at around 3,200 kg, the Explorer takes on a more northern, four-season vocation. Increased protection makes it possible to envisage longer voyages, in less clement conditions, without sacrificing the maneuverability of a 28-footer. This version responds to a changing market, where yachtsmen are looking for compact, year-round units capable of extending distances without depending on ideal weather conditions.

3 versions – 4 different layouts

For each of these three versions, Wellcraft offers 4 different layouts for the owner to choose from: Lounge, the standard layout; Barracuda for fishing, with integrated livewell and rod holder; Relax, the version for making the most of anchorages; and finally, Sleeper, reserved for the 28 Explorer, with two berths and an outdoor area for extended cruising.

Technically, Wellcraft highlights its WISE construction process, combining infusion and injection, with a hull and structure made in a single piece. The aim is twofold: to improve overall rigidity and ensure consistent industrial quality. On a boat of this size, where dynamic stresses are significant as soon as the sea begins to build up, structural rigidity remains a decisive argument.

Numbers aside, the Wellcraft 28 is a striking platform logic. Rather than creating three different boats, the shipyard proposes three readings of the same DNA. This approach rationalizes production while offering a fine-tuned response to distinct uses: speed and exposure, tempered versatility, or reinforced protection.

In a 28-foot market often dominated by very similar silhouettes, Wellcraft introduces an interesting variation. The boat was very well received at the Düsseldorf and Miami boat shows. It remains to be seen how the public will embrace this modularity. But on paper, the Wellcraft 28 raises a pertinent question: what if, for the same size, true luxury were now to offer a real choice of program?
