Cannes’ Régates Royales Steal the Show

by Jean-Christophe Guillaumin

In Cannes, the most beautiful stars don’t always climb the steps. Some hoist their sails. For their 48th edition, the Régates Royales gave the bay one of the most elegant castings in the Mediterranean: more than 150 sailboats, century-old yachts and those lines by Fife, Herreshoff or Gardner that seem to have been drawn for the light of the Croisette.

Among them, Eilean takes the leading role. The legendary 1936 Fife ketch, rescued and then magnificently restored, has returned to Cannes among the 12mR, 8mR, 5.5mR, Dragons, Tofinous and other classics.

On the water, flat calms and more sustained sailing set the rhythm of the week. Ashore, the show went on: varnished hulls, immaculate rigging and international crews turned the Old Port into a living museum of yachting. Cannes had its festival. This time, the Palme d’Or was won under sail.
