Edito – The Beneteau First 30, a rebounding success

by Pierre-Antoine Preti

Since its creation in 1977, the Beneteau First 30 has undergone five architectural rebounds. The latest of these was all the rage at this year’s Boot DĂŒsseldorf. The concept was guided by a thought as simple as it was effective: since foiling is not accessible to everyone, Beneteau chose to redefine a new category of boats with a planing, maneuverable and safe hull: the Planing Cruiser. Skippers couldn’t resist an in-depth visit, the video of which you can watch here.

Designed by French architect Samuel Manuard, this version is intended to be light (3.5 tons loaded), economical (150,000 francs equipped), practical and simple. These specifications have been well met for this planing sailboat, which can be fitted out as a family platform, the Weekender, or as a racing boat, the Race Club. In this second version, a few fine adjustments have been added, such as the mainsail traveler, which replaces the discreet goose foot. Gone, too, are the soft cushions in the saloon, replaced by fabric bunks for storing sails and other gear.

Equipped with a 14 HP inboard engine, the First 30 is a model of simplicity. Available with two draughts (1.98 m/1.68 m), the yacht measures 10.33 meters overall (8.75 m at the waterline). With two cabins, including a large “parental” triangle forward, life on board is equally simple.
