The 12m JI World Championship, held in Porquerolles, brought together 16 boats, including many challengers from the 1987 Cup, the latest to be held on these boats. Some of the oldest boats were also present, classically restored and maintained as true masterpieces, such as Flica II, built by William Fife & Son in 1939. Over 220 sailors crossed swords in this magnificent bay of Hyères. Among them was Torben Grael, at the helm of Patrizio Bertelli’s Kookaburra II, co-CEO of Prada. After battling hard for six races in conditions as varied as they were di§cult to manage, Kookaburra II won ahead of Kiwi Magic and French Kiss in Group 1 Grand Prix (built 1983-1987) and Modernes (built 1963-1983). In Group 2, featuring the Vintages (built before 1950), Northern Light (US14), skippered by Magnus Holmberg, won by one point from Jenetta (K1), a Mylne design built in 1939 and known for its hull painted with traditional Scottish checks.
