SailGP had never been to Sassnitz, a small town of 10,000 inhabitants in northern Germany. The Germany Sail Grand Prix was an eventful first. Spectators got their money’s worth thanks to strong winds and flat water. Dismastings, crashes, dislocations, and collisions enlivened the races and caused the Brazilians and Americans to withdraw for technical reasons.
On Saturday, some of the F50s, including Switzerland’s Eiger, even broke the symbolic 100 km/h speed barrier. The record is now held by the Dutch, who were clocked at 103.93 km/h.
Unfortunately, the Switzerland SailGP Team did not enjoy the same success as in Portsmouth (3rd). Finishing ninth in this Grand Prix, the Swiss consoled themselves with a victory in the final race. Video report with Sébastien Schneiter, skipper of the Swiss boat.
