Energy Team s’est donné un objectif clair : la 35e America’s Cup ! Loïck Peyron est désormais barreur de l’AC72 Artemis pour la 34e… un énorme avantage en terme de préparation. C’est donc Yann Guichard qui tiendra la barre de l’AC45 aux couleurs de Corum pour la suite des World Series 2013 qui se dérouleront à Naples puis aux Etats-Unis. Le point avec le directeur technique d’Energy Team, Antoine Mermod.
« Toute la saison 2013 est déjà centrée sur la préparation de la 35e édition de la Coupe de l’America » prévient d’emblée Antoine Mermod. Les choses se sont accélérées depuis quelques semaines. Avec le départ de Terry Hutchinson du team Artemis, Loïck Peyron est devenu officiellement un des deux barreurs de l’AC72, le grand multicoque de l’équipe suédoise. Loïck n’est plus « seulement speed coach » mais bien barreur en compagnie du jeune Australien Nathan Outteridge. Autrement dit, Loïck Peyron a une chance sur deux d’être « au guidon » de l’AC72 Artemis pour les épreuves de l’America’s Cup, l’été prochain à San Francisco.
YANN GUICHARD A LA BARRE DE L’AC45 ENERGY TEAM
« L’arrivée de Loïck chez Artemis est évidemment une excellente nouvelle pour Energy Team », estime Antoine Mermod. « Après avoir couru la 33e Cup avec Alinghi, Loïck engrange maintenant une expérience énorme sur la 34e chez Artemis. C’est un atout majeur pour ENERGY qui, autour de Bruno, se concentre depuis quelques mois sur la 35e édition. » Dans le même temps, l’équipage de l’AC45 Energy Team continue à travailler et à emmagasiner de l’expérience. Yann Guichard déjà très présent en début de saison, prendra la barre du catamaran ailé français pour la suite des AC World Series, à Naples en avril puis aux Etats-Unis en mai. « Je suis heureux que Yann prenne le guidon » précise Loï! ;ck Peyron, « Sa grande finesse à la barre et son aisance sur ce genre de support légitime qu’il prenne le guidon pour la suite de la saison. C’était le schéma envisagé ».
C’est tout l’intérêt d’avoir chez Energy Team deux barreurs de très haut niveau ! Pendant que l’un emmagasine de l’expérience sur l’AC72, l’autre continue à faire travailler un équipage de haut niveau. Yann Guichard sera donc à la barre, entouré de l’équipe habituelle : Christophe André (N°1), Devan Le Bihan (N°2) et les deux Arnaud : Psarofaghis aux réglages de l’aile et Jarlegan à ceux des voiles d’avant.
L’EXPERIENCE… ET LA JEUNESSE
L’équipage rejoindra le bateau à San Francisco en février prochain. « Nous avons programmé là-bas une séance d’entraînement qui va durer deux semaines », explique Antoine Mermod. « Pour progresser encore, il n’y a pas de secret : il faut naviguer. Voilà deux ans et demi maintenant que nous sommes dans ce projet et plus que jamais l’objectif est clair : gagner la 35e America’s Cup. Nous avons désormais tous les atouts en main pour cela. »
Du côté de la Youth America’s Cup, Energy Team s’est engagé à soutenir l’initiative des jeunes de la French Youth Team. Ces derniers devant se qualifier pour concourir en septembre prochain, entre la Louis Vuitton et l’America’s Cup, Energy va permettre à cette jeune équipe, de s’entrainer dès février prochain à San Francisco. Là aussi l’objectif est clair : constituer un réservoir de jeunes talents pour former un groupe au plus haut niveau, dans la perspective de la 35e America’s Cup.

« The whole of the 2013 season is already set to focus on the 35th America’s Cup, » Antoine Mermod began by telling us. Things have been moving quickly over the past few weeks. With Terry Hutchinson’s departure from the Artemis team, Loïck Peyron has officially become one of the two helmsmen on the AC72, the Swedish team’s big multihull. Loïck is no longer merely the speed coach, but the helmsman along with the young Australian, Nathan Outteridge. In other words, Loïck Peyron has a fifty-fifty chance of steering the Artemis AC72 in the America’s Cup races next summer in San Francisco.
YANN GUICHARD AT THE HELM OF THE ENERGY TEAM AC45
« Loïck’s move to Artemis is, of course, excellent news for Energy Team, » declared Antoine Mermod. « After racing in the 33rd Cup with Alinghi, Loïck is acquiring a huge amount of experience in the 34th with Artemis. This is a major asset for ENERGY, which united around Bruno, has been focusing for several months on the 35th Cup. » At the same time, the crew of the Energy Team AC45 is continuing to work and build up its experience. Yann Guichard, who was already heavily involved earlier in the season, will be taking the helm of the French winged catamaran for what lies ahead in the AC World Series in Naples in April and then in the United States in May. « I’m pleased that Yann will be taking the helm » stated Loïck Peyron, « His huge skill at the helm and his ease o! n this type of boat means it is right for him to take the wheel for the rest of the season. This is exactly what we had planned. »
That is what it makes it so interesting for Energy Team to have two top class helmsmen. While one gains experience on the AC72, the other is able to continue to lead a high standard crew. Yann Guichard will be at the helm with the usual team around him: Christophe André (Bowman), Devan Le Bihan (foredeck) and the two Arnauds: Psarofaghis as wing trimmer and Jarlegan taking care of the headsails.
YOUTH AND EXPERIENCE
The crew will be back aboard the boat in San Francisco in February. « We have scheduled a training session lasting a fortnight, » explained Antoine Mermod. « To continue to progress, there’s no secret about what is required: you have to get out there sailing. We’ve been involved in this project now for two and a half years and more than ever, the goal is clear: victory in the 35th America’s Cup. We now have all it takes to be able to do just that. »
As for the Youth America’s Cup, Energy Team has decided to support the youngsters in the French Youth Team. They should be qualifying to compete next September in an event taking place between the Louis Vuitton and America’s Cup. Energy will be enabling this young team to train in February in San Francisco. One again here, the goal is clear: to build up a pool of young talent to form a top class group with the 35th America’s Cup in mind.
