Les deux équipages Hydros représentant la Suisse au Championnat du Monde des Class C – laboratoire technologique qui accueille certains des plus grands noms de la voile internationale, ont enfin pu régater à Falmouth (UK). Après une première journée avortée pour cause de brouillard et de vent capricieux, les marins ont disputé les premières manches de la Petite Coupe au large du Restronguet Sailing Club.
Le brouillard levé, les deux Class C Hydros accompagnés de leurs huit concurrents ont pu rejoindre la zone de course dans la baie dans un vent soutenu entre 16 et 18 nœuds. Dès le départ, les Anglais de Team Invictus dessalent et donnent le ton d’une régate qui s’annonce sportive.
Les deux catamarans volants à mât-aile Hydros, qui portent haut les couleurs de la Suisse et de leurs partenaires, sont puissants, et le vent qui monte encore d’un cran rend les réglages difficiles comme témoigne Jérémie Lagarrigue, chef de projet et navigant Hydros : « Je me focalisais sur l’équilibre du bateau, les régalages des foils, mais c’était vraiment difficile de régler l’aile en même temps et de tenir la dragée haute à Groupama, barré par Franck Cammas, qui était impressionnant au près. Nous avons des bateaux très puissants et peut-être un peu trop pour cette météo musclée. » Le résultat est encourageant et à la hauteur du travail fourni par toute l’équipe Hydros durant des mois de préparation : SUI 1 (Besson – Lagarrigue) termine deuxième et SUI 11 (Heemskerk – Tentij) 3ème.
Le vent monte d’un cran pour la deuxième manche, près de 20 nœuds. Une risée violente surprend SUI 11 en plein vol. Leur Class C dessale, son aile subit des dommages conséquents et force les Hollandais à rejoindre la base. SUI 1 termine deuxième à nouveau quelques encablures derrière Groupama C.
Une troisième manche vient clôturer la journée dans les mêmes conditions. Le match Groupama C – Hydros 1 fait rage: au près, les Français naviguent un cran au dessus, au portant, la tendance s’inverse. Le vent est trop fort pour une stratégie fine et une navigation délicate. Le débat est clos pour aujourd’hui : trois deuxièmes places pour Hydros 1, et de très fortes émotions pour les équipages.
« C’était incroyable ! Lancé à 30 nœuds, le bateau file mais l’erreur n’est pas tolérée. C’est une concentration de chaque instant. Nous nous sommes fait quelques frayeurs, et cela demande énormément d’énergie de gérer ces situations » lâche le barreur Billy Besson, visiblement soulagé du bilan.
De son côté, Mischa Heemskerk est touché, émotionnellement, la casse induite sur l’aile de son Class C ont laissé des traces : « Nous savons que cela fait partie du jeu, mais cela fait plus de neuf mois que nous investissons toute notre énergie sur ce projet. Nous allons tout mettre en œuvre pour réparer, mais les dégâts ne sont pas négligeables. J’espère vraiment retourner sur l’eau rapidement ! ».
L’équipe technique travaille maintenant sur le Class C, afin d’établir un diagnostic et de mettre en œuvre les réparations.
The two Hydros crews representing Switzerland during the C-Class World Championship – technological lab welcoming some of the most famous international sailors -were finally able to race in Falmouth (U.K.). After a first day cancelled due to fog and capricious winds, the sailors could finally do the first races of the Little Cup next to the Restronguet Sailing Club today.
Once the fog gone, both Hydros C-Class Catamarans along with their eight competitors were finally able to go to the racing zone in the bay in a pretty strong wind between 16 and 18 knots. Right from the very start, the English boat of Team Invictus capsized and set the tone of the race which was going to be quite intense.
The two Hydros flying catamarans with wingsails, fiercely defending the Swiss Flag and their partners, were powerful, but the wind constantly going up made the adjustments difficult as testified Jérémie Lagarrigue, project manager and crew member of Hydros: “I was focusing on the balance of the boat, and the adjustment of the foils, but it was really difficult to control the wing at the same time and to hold out on Groupama, steered by Franck Cammas, who was impressive upwind. We have very powerful boats and perhaps a little bit too powerful for this weather.” The result is encouraging and worthy of the work accomplished by all the Hydros team over the months of preparation: SUI 1 (Besson – Lagarrigue) finished second and SUI 11 (Heemskerk – Tentij) third.
The wind went up a notch for the second race, almost up to 20 knots. A violent gust surprised SUI 11 while flying. Their C-Class capsized which seriously damaged the wingsail and forced the Dutchmen to go back to base. SUI 1 finished second again not far behind Groupama C.
A third race ended the day in the same conditions. The match Groupama C – Hydros 1 was launched: upwind, the French were a bit better, downwind, it was the opposite. The wind was too strong for either a subtle strategy or navigation. The debate was closed for the day: three second places for Hydros 1, and very strong feelings for the crews.
“It was incredible! At 30 knots, the boat is sailing but no mistake is allowed. It is a constant attention. We had some frights, and it requires a lot of energy to handle these situations” Billy Besson said, obviously relieved by the results of the day.
On its side, Mischa Heemskerk is affected, emotionally; the damage on the wingsail of his C-Class will have consequences: “We know that’s part of the game, but we have been investing our energy on this project for more than 9 months. We will do everything to repair, but the damage is not minor. I really hope to be able to go back sailing quickly! ”.
The technical team is now working on the C-Class in order to evaluate the importance of the damage and start the repairs.
