La légende de la voile française et vainqueur de la Volvo Ocean Race en tant que skipper de Groupama 4, Franck Cammas a rejoint les 600 cyclistes du peloton ce matin pour prendre le départ de la troisième étape de la Haute Route, la plus haute et la plus difficile cyclosportive au monde.
La troisième journée de cet événement d’une semaine était très redoutée par les participants, avec 138 km à parcourir entre Courchevel et L’Alpe d’Huez à travers trois des plus difficiles cols alpins. Toujours prêt à relever un défi, Cammas a délivré une très belle performance en complétant l’étape marathon en 5 heures et 27 minutes.
Après avoir quitté Courchevel Le Praz (1300) à 7h30 ce matin, Cammas a dû faire face à trois des plus difficiles ascensions des Alpes. Le Col de la Madeleine, le Col du Glandon et l’ascension finale de L’Alpe d’Huez ont représenté un test réel pour tous les participants qui se sont entraînés pendant des mois en préparation de l’événement. Cammas a admis qu’il avait manqué de temps pour s’entraîner sérieusement après sa victoire dans la Volvo Ocean Race et que cette étape difficile a été un grand défi physique et mental pour lui.
« La montée de L’Alpe d’Huez était très, très dure à la fin », déclarait Cammas. « J’étais en souffrance mais j’ai pu finir l’étape avec le peu de force qu’il me restait dans les jambes. Donc je suis très content d’avoir fini. À la fin, entre Huez et L’Alpe d’Huez, c’était vraiment difficile d’avoir une grosse montée sous un soleil de plomb ».
Cammas a franchi la ligne d’arrivée à L’Alpe d’Huez en 40ème position cette après-midi, en 5 heures 25 minutes 7 secondes, seulement une heure après le vainqueur de l’étape Peter Pouly.
« Il y a une très bonne ambiance entre les cyclistes », commentait Cammas qui s’est joint au peloton pour seulement une étape cette année, « C’était sympa mais je m’arrête là, je ne me suis pas assez entraîné avant. Peut-être l’année prochaine ! »
La deuxième édition de la Haute Route, partie de Genève le dimanche 19 août propose un parcours exceptionnel de 780 km et 21000 mètres de dénivelé positif en 7 étapes chronométrées à travers 19 cols alpins de légende. Les 600 participants espèrent franchir la ligne d’arrivée sur la mythique Promenade des Anglais à Nice le samedi 25 août.

French sailing legend and winner of the Volvo Ocean Race as skipper of Groupama 4, Franck Cammas joined 600 cyclists on the start line in Courchevel this morning to take on Stage 3 of the Haute Route – the World’s Toughest and Highest cyclosportive.
This third day of the seven-day event has been feared by many of the peloton, with a punishing 138km to cover between Courchevel and Alpe d’Huez via three of the Alps’ toughest climbs. Never one to be phased by a challenge, Cammas excelled himself to complete the marathon stage in 5 hours and 27 minutes.
After leaving Courchevel 1300 at 0730 this morning, Cammas faced three of the hardest ascents in the Alps back-to-back. Cycling up the Col de la Madeleine, Col du Glandon and a final ascent to Alpe d’Huez proved to be a huge test for riders who have been training for many months for this event. By Cammas’ own admittance, he has lacked the time to fully train following his Volvo Ocean Race win, so to embark on such a tough stage has been a big mental and physical challenge.
“The Alpe d’Huez climb was very, very tough at the end,” said Cammas. “I was in pain so I only just managed at the end to have enough power in my legs so I am very happy to finish! At the end, between Huez and Alpe d’Huez, it was hard. To have such a big climb at the end with the sun was really hot for me.”
Cammas was the 40th rider to cross the line in Alpe D’Huez this afternoon in a time of 5 hours, 25 mins and 7 secs, only an hour behind stage winner Peter Pouly.
“There is a very good ambiance and atmosphere between the riders.” Commented Cammas who joins the Haute Route for only one stage this year, “It was fun, but enough for me, not enough training to join the full race. Maybe next year…”
The 2nd edition of the Haute Route Alps began in Geneva on Sunday 19th August and in total covers 780km in 7 timed stages and 21,000m of ascent across some of cycling’s most legendary Alpine cols. 600 riders hope to reach the finish line on the mythical Promenade des Anglais in Nice on Saturday 25th August.
