Du vent, moins de vent, des bascules, de la pluie, et une victoire d’Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing : la course In-Port Iberdrola a vu le triomphe du faucon dans des conditions stressantes.
Azzam et son emblématique faucon ont rapidement mené la flotte, s’envolant dans un vent d’une toute petite dizaine de noeuds. Ian Walker, le skipper d’Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing, est ravi de cette première victoire sur un parcours en L mouillé le long de la côte alicantaise.
« C’était vraiment compliqué sur l’eau et aucun d’entre nous ne s’y attendait – on pensait qu’on aurait du vent fort ! »
« C’est une belle victoire. Je ne pense pas que ça signifie beaucoup, mais je disais avant de partir que celui qui gagnerait aujourd’hui pourrait rentrer chez lui avec une bonne impression et préparer avec hâte la semaine prochaine. C’est un beau début pour Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing. »
Le reste de la flotte s’est disputé avec acharnement les points restants. PUMA Ocean Racing, beau deuxième, a longtemps talonné Abu Dhabi. CAMPER with Emirates Team New Zealand prend finalement la troisième place après une course mouvementée : l’équipage kiwi est passé de la deuxième à la dernière place après un changement de voile peu pertinent sur un bord de portant.
L’outsider Team Sanya signe un début prometteur : dernier à la première marque, l’équipage de Mike Sanderson a réussi à prendre la quatrième place en doublant notamment Telefónica sur la ligne à la faveur d’une priorité tribord.
Les Français de Groupama sailing team terminent cinquièmes. Telefónica, pénalisé, prend la dernière place.
« C’est dommage car on a fait la tactique et le départ qu’on voulait sur la première partie, » racontait Franck Cammas à l’arrivée. « On était troisièmes à un moment, puis on a pris quelques mauvaises décisions. Dans ces conditions, les mètres coutent cher. »
Pour sa première régate dans la Volvo Ocean Race, le skipper français reste serein. Il se dit satisfait des progrès de son équipe sur les In-Port, un domaine que Groupama maitrise sans doute moins que les autres.
« On a amélioré la façon dont on navigue et dont on communique à bord. Le résultat n’est pas à la hauteur de cette amélioration. On est dans le groupe, mais un peu derrière – on a neuf mois pour progresser ! »
Les six équipes ont maintenant une semaine pour se préparer aux 6 500 milles entre Alicante et Le Cap, Afrique du Sud. Départ le 5 novembre prochain.

Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing delivered a blow to their rivals, picking up the first points of the Volvo Ocean Race 2011-12 with a commanding victory in the inaugural Iberdrola In-Port Race in Alicante, Spain.
The crew, led by British skipper Ian Walker, came out on top in a tense start to what is shaping up to be the most hotly-contested edition in the race’s 38-year history.
Abu Dhabi timed their start to perfection and kept their noses in front of closest rivals CAMPER and PUMA Ocean Racing all the way to the first mark, rounding with an advantage of just 15 seconds.
As the wind died, a slick sail change from the Abu Dhabi crew saw them round the second mark 26 seconds ahead of CAMPER, who then lost territory dramatically during a maneuver, losing second place to PUMA’s Mar Mostro and slipping down the fleet.
Abu Dhabi held off PUMA to go through the gate ahead once again and Walker and his crew on Azzam then roared home first as the wind picked up again.
The in-port race marked the start of the epic 39,000 nautical mile round the world race, tipped to be the most hotly contested edition in the event´s 38-year history. And after opening their account with a crucial win, Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing will go into the first offshore leg with a maximum six points and a psychological advantage.
In-port races take place in all 10 Host Ports around the world, testing the crews’ skills at close-quarters manoeuvres and tactics. More than 20 per cent of all points are up for grabs in the in-port racing, which could prove vital when overall positions are decided. The races also provide a show for the millions of people who will watch the race worldwide.
