Même Leigh McMillan, skipper de The Wave, Muscat reconnaît qu’il ne pensait pas pouvoir gagner à l’aube de la dernière journée. Mais il entame la saison 2013 là où il l’avait laissée en 2012 : sur la plus haute marche du podium.
– Grosse déception en revanche pour Red Bull Sailing Team, qui rate ce qui aurait pu être sa toute première victoire sur le circuit, dans les dernières secondes de la dernière manche, après avoir mené quasiment toute l’épreuve.

– Les nouvelles équipes apportent un peu de fraîcheur au sein de la flotte et donnent un avant-goût de ce qui s’annonce déjà comme une saison très disputée.
Les bateaux n’ont peut-être pas atteint des vitesses exceptionnelles en cette dernière journée de course à Mascate, au Sultanat d’Oman, mais la tension était bien palpable sur le plan d’eau pour le premier Act des Extreme Sailing Series 2013. Le champion en titre, Leigh McMillan et son équipe de The Wave, Muscat ont eu une journée de rêve en réussissant à combler leurs 15 points de retard sur le leader Red Bull Sailing Team pour remporter la victoire de l’étape à domicile et dans un finish à couper le souffle.
Au départ de la dernière manche du jour, comptant double, deux points seulement séparaient Red Bull Sailing Team de The Wave, Muscat. Le calcul était dès lors très simple : l’équipe qui finirait devant l’autre, gagnerait l’épreuve. A l’arrivée, c’est l’équipe invitée, Team Duqm Oman, qui s’impose, avec à la barre Robert Greenhalgh, le vainqueur de la toute première édition des Series en 2007, mais The Wave, Muscat s’en sort mieux que son principal adversaire au terme d’une intense bataille. « Nous avons eu une semaine en demi-teinte, mais une journée vraiment exceptionnelle aujourd’hui », confiait McMillan encore sous le choc à l’arrivée. « C’est ça la voile. On n’y arrive pas toujours, mais aujourd’hui on a vraiment navigué au mieux au moment le plus important. Je ne sais pas si nous réussirons à renouveler un tel exploit à chaque épreuve. C’était un sacré défi, mais je suis très heureux d’avoir fait une si belle journée aujourd’hui ».
Red Bull Sailing Team était particulièrement en forme cette semaine à Mascate, excellant aussi bien dans la brise sur plan d’eau ouvert lors de la première journée, que dans le petit temps et en mode stade nautique les jours suivants. L’équipe autrichienne était bien partie pour remporter sa toute première victoire d’étape, mais le destin en a voulu autrement et le skipper double médaillé d’or olympique risque de repenser très longtemps à cette dernière manche. “Nous avons pris un bon départ, comme The Wave, Muscat, mais ils ont été plus rapides et nous ne pouvions pas les rattraper sur ces petits parcours. J’espère juste que nous ferons mieux à Singapour ».
De son côté, Alinghi a fait preuve d’une belle régularité tout au long de cet Act. L’équipe suisse, qui a remporté l’America’s Cup en 2003 et 2007, est menée par Ernesto Bertarelli à la barre, et Morgan Larson à la tactique, l’ancien skipper d’Oman Air qui avait terminé deuxième l’année dernière. Le nouveau duo a été très rapide sur l’eau et permet à son équipe de grimper sur le podium pour la première fois depuis 2011. D’après les données de SAP, Alinghi a même été le plus rapide à Oman, avec une vitesse moyenne de 8,54 noeuds. Reste à réduire la distance parcourue et Alinghi pourra grimper sur la plus haute marche. “C’était une belle course. Nous avons une bonne équipe et l’arrivée de Morgan Larson est très positive pour nous. Nous sommes très, très contents de notre troisième place”, a déclaré Pierre-Yves Jorand. “Ernesto, Yves, Nils et moi avons bien sûr l’habitude de naviguer ensemble. Nous sommes très à l’aise dans ces conditions de petit temps. Morgan a fait de bons choix tactiques. Nous n’avons pas commencé au mieux la journée aujourd’hui, mais au final on s’en sort très bien. Nous sommes très satisfaits”.
Les nouveaux skippers de Realteam, GAC Pindar et Team Korea qui viennent d’intégrer le circuit, ont chacun eu leur moment de gloire dans cette épreuve et prouvent qu’il faudra compter sur eux cette saison. Depuis sa médaille d’argent pour la Nouvelle-Zélande aux JO de Londres l’année dernière, Peter Burling n’a pas arrêté, menant d’abord Team Korea dans les America’s Cup World Series, avant de prendre la barre de l’Extreme 40 pour une saison dans les Extreme Sailing Series. Pour sa toute première épreuve sur le circuit, il termine à une prometteuse cinquième place. Prochaine étape : Singapour, où la flotte s’affrontera dans le célèbre Marina Bay Reservoir, du 11 au 14 avril, avec une nouvelle équipe invitée, Team Aberdeen Singapore.

It may not have been high speed racing on the final day of the Extreme Sailing Series opening Act in Muscat, Oman, today but it was as tense as it gets, and in classic Extreme Sailing Series style, it came down to the final race for the winner to be decided. Defending champion Leigh McMillan and his team on The Wave, Muscat sailed a picture perfect day coming back from a 15 point deficit to Red Bull Sailing Team to claim overall victory, in the closest possible finish on their home turf.
Just two points separated Red Bull Sailing Team and The Wave, Muscat going into the final double-pointer and the maths was simple – whoever performed better in that race, would win the Act. The invitational home team, Team Duqm Oman – with the winner of the inaugural Series back in 2007 Robert Greenhalgh at the helm – won the race, but The Wave Muscat did enough to secure victory after a tense battle. An elated, and slightly shell-shocked McMillan commented: “We have had a mixed bag this week but an exceptional day today, that’s just the way the sport is. You can’t always get it right, but today we did it when it absolutely mattered. I’m not sure if we will be able to go and pull something off like that again, at every event! It was a tall ask for the team today but I’m just delighted that we just managed to have such a good day.”
Red Bull Sailing Team have been one of the form teams in Muscat this week, handling the big breeze open water racing on day one with equal skill as the light wind stadium racing. But it was not to be for the double Olympic gold medal-winning skipper Roman Hagara as his pre-race concerns about falling at the final hurdle came to fruition and tonight they will surely be thinking about what could have been. “In that last race we were good off of the start line, matching them (The Wave, Muscat), but in the end we were not fast enough and could not hold them off. There was no way to catch up and the courses are so short. I just hope we can do better in Singapore,” said Hagara.
The Swiss America’s Cup winners Alinghi have been rock solid since the beginning of the Act, with the new pairing of skipper Ernesto Bertarelli and tactician Morgan Larson, who steered Oman Air to second place last season, leading the team to their first podium position since 2011. The SAP analytical data tells us they were the fastest boat on the course this week, at an average of 8.54 knots, and if they can get their distance sailed down, they could be on a course to victory. Trimmer Pierre-Yves Jorand said: “It was a great race, we have a great team and the addition of Morgan Larson is just huge for us and we are very, very happy with our third place. Obviously Ernesto, Yves, Nils and I are used to sailing together, we understand each other very well in these light conditions. Morgan made some great calls on the tactics as well as looking at the pulse and looking at the pressure. We didn’t start off too well today but we did it very nicely in the end, we are really happy!”
For the new skippers on Realteam, GAC Pindar and Team Korea who joined the party in Oman, each has showed moments of brilliance, a sign of things to come this year and a testament to how strong the fleet is.
