Ipsum 45, the missing link in the chain for trimaran fans

by Jean-Christophe Guillaumin

This is a trimaran project that stands out among the catamarans for large cruises, whose volume and fittings are reminiscent of those of the most affluent homes. The Ipsum is an ode to the pioneers of trimaran cruise ships of the 70s.

Enthusiasts will recognize at first glance the inspirations that led to the creation of the Ipsum 45: the legendary trimaran Olympus by Mike Birch, winner of the first Route du Rhum, but also the iconic designs by architects Dick Newick, Jim Brown, Derek Kelsall and Piver and Wharram.

A revived heritage

You can know your classics, love legendary boats and still want to sail on a modern hull. The founders of the project, naval architect LoĂŻc Goepfert and designer Julien Boucher, have worked on the maxi trimaran Edmond de Rothschild and the fast cruising catamarans Alibi, among others.

The result is amazing, but it is also based on an innovative industrial model. A base consisting of several high-tech structural parts designed by the best manufacturers of ocean-going yachts can be supplemented by a large number of modular options. The whole fits into one or more 40-foot containers. The owner then has the freedom to complete the construction and finishing with the shipyard on the continent of his choice.

The 14.20 m x 9.15 m trimaran can be converted according to the skipper’s wishes, whereby the sleeping modules can be accommodated in the wings, in keeping with the van-life concept. The wings can also be used to store surfboards, supplies for the big cruise and many other items of equipment… There are no limits to the imagination with the Ipsum 45.
